Televisions at CES 2008 - LCDs, Plasmas & Widescreens, Oh My!

Pioneer Kura Plasma TV 9mm ThinOf course we love TVs, but for CES 2008 we’re always on the look out for cool ultra mobile devices, cell phones, tablets and other computer gadgets. However, therefore, please do note . . . there are some pretty cool TVs and computer monitors being announced this year at CES. Here is a brief run down of Geeky Drunk’s favorites so far:

The Pioneer Kuro concept plasma TV is amazingly thin, only 9mm thin, which is thinner than an iPhone! Just look at how thin that TV is, it really is unbelievable. Not only is it thin, but it must weigh a lot less than your standard plasma TV. In addition to the new anorexic look, Pioneer was also demonstrating the amazing contrast of the Kuro plasma and complete lack of light bleed as you would see with a LCD. To think those drunk guys at the CES Bloghaus were saying plasma was dead just last night!

Alienware really outdid themselves this year with their new LCD monitor. You thought their PCs looked cool? Well, you haven’t seen anything yet. This massive wide-screen DLP monitor, with unique curved shape for the ultimate in geeky game playing, boasts a 2880 x 900 resolution and .02 ms response time. How big is it? Over 3 feet wide!

Live Video Streaming of CES 2008?

CES 2008 Live Video StreamThis is pretty cool. I finally found it at around 1 am and there is a guy on there totally drunk just blabbering about geeky stuff. Just what this site is about!

Podtech is live streaming at Bloghaus and CES, well it seems like they are live streaming…some times it may be live and other times is pre-recorded. If I was a betting sober man I would guess it is looped videos that are recently updated. It’s really confusing, but for some geeky drunk live / close-to-live video of CES 2008 - check it out.

Also of note is the Bill Gates CES Keynote Address video where there is a funny skit with him rocking out on Guitar Hero III, and then Slash comes out at the end with a real guitar. That Slash is so cool he doesn’t have to say anything - and he plays a real guitar!

Windows Vista Celebrates Birthday by Saying “Buy Me!”

Windows Vista Birthday OfferThis Geeky Drunk received an email from good ole’ Microsoft celebrating the one-year birthday of little Vista, and thanking me for participating in testing of Windows Vista Beta or Release Candidates. To show their supposed appreciation, Microsoft has several special offers available exclusively to me! That’s right, just to me . . . I must have been a pretty darn good tester. “To show our appreciation, we have several special offers exclusively available to you.”

Offer 1: The ULTIMATE OFFER

Purchase a standalone full package Windows Vista Ultimate product, full or upgrade version, and they’ll match that with a second complimentary Windows Vista Upgrade product key. You can use this (well this offer is only for me, so I can use this) to upgrade a XP or Windows Vista computer to Windows Vista Ultimate. Then I can play that cool Hold ‘Em Poker game.

Offer 2: One hundred $250 gift certificates

I can enter for a chance to win a $250 Amazon gift certificate by taking a short online survey. Of course, as this offer is just for me, I am bound to win!

Offer 3: Win a ASUS W5fe computer signed by Bill Gates.

It is a very powerful, small and light weight computer which incorporates the Windows SideShow technology. This prize is pretty cool. You read e-mail, play music, and access photos and other content via a secondary 2.8-inch, full-color display integrated into the outer lid of the laptop. I can’t wait for Bill to send this to me!

If you believe you qualify for this offer and haven’t received the email, well no big surprise because it is just for me. You could always head over to WindowsVistaEvalComp.com and log in with your Windows Live id (the email you use for testing Windows products) . . . maybe they like you, too. I kinda doubt it.

So, despite being an obvious ploy to get me to purchase another copy of Windows Vista Ultimate, I’m going to get at least one $250 Amazon gift card and a $2000 laptop! I guess I’ll buy one more copy Bill, but this is the last one.

Offer void in Utah and Alaska. Happy Birthday Vista Baby!
(Sorry you have to give yourself away so soon…)

What We Already Know About CES

CES 2008 Consumer Electronic ShowIt’s that time of year, and a great time to start our new Geeky Drunk website - CES 2008.

If it wasn’t such a geeky event, I might be able to talk my wife into letting us take a vacation to CES one year. But alas, I’d have to get her real drunk to agree to such a thing. Geeky Drunk anyone? That’s my kind of wife!

Here is the list we came up with regarding devices ALREADY announced for CES 2008:

  • Intel’s MID devices, including the eo UMPC running on Intel’s Minlow platform from TabletKiosk.
  • HP’s new TX2000 Tablet PC, which is reviewed here.
  • Xias new picture frames and viewers
  • Nokia for the possible upgrade to the Nokia N810 internet tablet, and to see if they have any cool new cell phones.
  • Asus for the possible upgrade to the Asus Eee PC, which could include a larger screen (height wise) and built in WWAN via Sprint Wi-Max or other means.
  • You would have to be drunker than Cootie Brown to visit the Dell booth to see their new Latitude XT Tablet PC, priced similar to the car loan you still need to pay off.

Lastly, we definitely ARE NOT interested in the HD DVD booth as Warner Brothers has decided to go with Blue-ray, so there is nothing to see there. Could HD DVD be the next Beta-Max, or will they both end up in that same turmoil state? The HD DVD players are about twice as cheap so there is still life there, but just like game consoles, content will win over price.

Mobile devices will win are interest over here, and hopefully we aren’t too drunk with geekness to cover them all!
