Thanks indeed - I resisted the urge to tear Vista off my new laptop as I did the last time and upgrade it to XP Pro, in order to give it a chance. Vista has disappointed as thoroughly as Obama ("let's give him a chance"), and I've been almost tearing my hair wondering how you work around this.

Love this guide, thank you!

Note to all, you have to "Rest Folders" and "Apply to Folders" for Every folder type. So basically I had to do this three or four times for every folder type Documents, Pictures, Music, ect

Does one size fit all?

In general I too want as much useful info as possible. I do NOT want all of my folder to be the same. I tried that. I don't recall what it did to Control Panel, but I have a folder full of icons representing the various apps on my system. Changing this meant that suddenly I had a bunch of filenames in detail format. I also had some photo folders and the files were thumbnails or perhaps filmstrip. They were also changed to filenames in detail format. It would seem that I am damned if I do and damned if I don't.

What brought on this latest search was that I moved a bunch of directories into a super directory. Each of the old directories had a detailed view without the Type column. As soon as I moved them to the super directory each of them reverted back to the Windows default.

I want to change what the default is.

Thank you so much, it was annoying having the list view for half the folders and different views for other folders.

Now i have all views set to tiles which is what i prefer, thanks again.

Go to View, Customize This Folder, then go to the Customize Tab, choose "All Items" from the dropdown menu showing type, and check the box below it for "Also apply this template to all sub folders" and you're done.
