I’ve Lost A Lot of Respect for David Letterman

David Letterman Politics are not FunnyThis is really, really hard to write. I hate to admit it, even to myself. I’ve been watching David Letterman religiously for nearly 20 years. I would keep the TV volume low in my bedroom during 9th grade so I could stay up every night until 1:30 AM to watch Late Nite with David Letterman. My love and affection for David Letterman goes much deeper than you will even know due to meeting him and what he did for me, which I’ll get to in a later post I guess, but let me explain why I’m mad.

David Letterman had Scott McClellan on tonight, President Bush’s former Press Secretary who wrote the book “What Happened” which was negative against the current administration. First of all, it wasn’t a big surprise that Scott McClellan was on David Letterman. I never had any idea what political party David Letterman favored until just the past couple of years. And I liked it that way.

Sure, he has good interviews with politicians and other related guests, but professionals can have a good interview without letting their personal view or agenda get in the way. Dave has had a very hard time doing that, which gets in the way of the comedy and fun of the show. I don’t care what side you’re on, if any, but you would rather hear Dave tell a funny joke than give his 2 cents about something he doesn’t specialize in.

Geeky Drunk isn’t a political site, we’re supposed to get geeky and drunk on here, but this is what David Letterman said tonight:

My feeling about Cheney and also Bush, but especially Cheney, is that he just couldn’t care less about Americans. And the same is true for George Bush. And all they really want to do is somehow kiss up to the oil people so they can get some great annuity when they’re out of office. ‘There you go Dick, nice job! There’s a couple of billion for your trouble.’

I mean he pretty much put Halliburton in business, and the outsourcing of the military resources to private mercenary groups and so forth. Is there any humanity in either of these guys?

Again, we’re not looking to talk politics here, but come on Dave. Get a grip. Bush and Cheney could care less about Americans?!? I don’t care what you think about the war, but the President and Vice President care about Americans. The whole idea that they’re making all of these decisions for money is just rediculous. They already have a lot of money, they are set for life . . . why care less about Americans and “ruin this country” as you would probably allude, just to add more millions to the millions they already had?

It’s unmaginable that my favorite comedian David Letterman could say these things . . . if it was just another comment on Digg I could understand. But this is the 2nd King of Late Nite we’re talking about here! Dave please stick to funny - you’re no good at politics.

  1. Please provide some evidence — ANY evidence — that the President and Vice President care about Americans.

Honestly, I’d love to see it. It would make me feel at least a little better about our country. As things are, the harder I look the more discouraged I get..

  2. As far as I’m concerned, Dave said what many of us are thinking … at least, those of us who haven’t swallowed the Bush-Cheney line of BS from the last seven years.

  3. Given Dave’s longevity in the late-night business, I think we need to give him a break here. So what if it wasn’t “funny”? It was real and took some balls. Way to go Dave!

  4. You know, some people[hopefully most]change as they
get older and gain life experience, and Letterman is no
different than the rest of us. He’s still a funny guy, but
he’s gotten a little more philosophical and since his
brush with mortality, perhaps a little more serious
which can’t help but translate to his ‘on-air’ persona.

Considering the majority of Americans at this point
are sick of the war in Iraq and want it over/us out,
do you think perhaps Dave feels that way as well?
We know now that the Bush/Cheney administration
lied/embellished the ‘facts’ in order to get the American
people behind the attack on Iraq, and this has much
to do with Bush’s lousy popularity ratings. Don’t you
think that Dave feels as betrayed by Bush & Co. as do
most of us who have open eyes? Doesn’t he have
a right to express his opinion on his show?

How can you, at this point, fool yourself into thinking
that Bush/Cheney have any concern for the American
people? They don’t necessarily want more money,
but money equals power and they crave that. They
care for what America can do for THEM.

Just ask the 4108 dead US servicemen how much
    they think Bush/Cheney care….oh..sorry..you can’t..
    they’re dead.

  5. I think it took a lot of guts and class for Dave to say that. This has been the most shameful and corrupt administration ever. Bush and Cheney and all of the PNAC neocons are little more that profiteers and war-mongers. Not only do they expect poor people to fight their hobby-war, they cut taxes for the rich and for corporations, so that poor would also have to pay for their hobby-war.
